This Privacy Policy explains how Kehilla LLC ("Kehilla," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information about you when you use the Kehilla mobile application and the website at kehilla.app (together, the "Service").

Kehilla is a community directory and information platform serving the Jewish community of Los Angeles. We have written this policy to describe what our Service actually does. If our practices change, we will update this policy and revise the date above.

By using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Who We Are

2. Age Requirement

The Service is intended for users who are at least 13 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. During signup, we ask for your date of birth to confirm you meet this requirement, and we do not permit accounts for users under 13.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information, contact us at info@kehilla.app and we will delete it.

If you are between 13 and 18, please review this policy with a parent or guardian before using the Service.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Information you provide

  • Account information. When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password. If you sign in using Google or Apple, we receive basic profile information (such as your name and email) from that provider. We collect your date of birth to confirm you meet our age requirement.
  • Profile information. Any information you choose to add to your profile, such as a photo, neighborhood, or preferences.
  • User content. Content you submit to the Service, including business listings, posts, comments, photographs, event information, and follows.
  • Business listing information. If you list a business or organization, we collect the information you provide about it, including descriptions, hours, contact details, and any certifications you represent it holds.
  • Communications. Information you provide when you contact us for support or otherwise.

3.2 Information we collect automatically

  • Location. With your permission, the Service uses your device's location while the app is in use to show maps, nearby businesses, directions, and location-specific Shabbat and holiday times. This may include precise location. We do not track your location in the background or when the app is closed. If you deny location permission, you can still use the Service with a neighborhood you select or a default Los Angeles location.
  • Device and usage information. We collect information such as device type, operating system, app version, push notification tokens, IP address, and basic session information, primarily to deliver notifications and operate the Service.

3.3 What we do NOT collect

To be clear about what we do not do:

  • We do not use advertising identifiers (such as Apple's IDFA or Google's Advertising ID).
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites.
  • We do not include advertising SDKs or the Meta/Facebook SDK in the app.
  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

4. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account and authenticate your sign-in;
  • Operate the directory and display listings, posts, and community content;
  • Show maps, directions, nearby businesses, and location-specific religious times;
  • Send push notifications you have enabled, including community and business updates and Shabbat-related notifications;
  • Provide customer support and respond to your requests;
  • Maintain the security of the Service, prevent fraud, and enforce our Terms of Service;
  • Comply with legal obligations and maintain required records.

5. How We Share Information

We share information only as described here.

5.1 Publicly on the Service

Content you post publicly — including business listings, posts, comments, and profile information you choose to make visible — is visible to other users of the Service. Do not post anything you do not want others to see.

5.2 With service providers

We share information with third-party companies that help us operate the Service. Each processes information only to provide services to us:

  • Supabase — authentication, database, and file storage (account data, profiles, posts, listings, preferences);
  • OneSignal — push notification delivery (push tokens, device and session information, IP address);
  • Google Maps Platform — maps, places, directions, and location features;
  • Google and Apple — sign-in authentication, and, for purchases, payment processing (see Section 6);
  • Hebcal — location and timezone information used to calculate Shabbat and holiday times.

5.3 For legal reasons

We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or legal process, or where we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of Kehilla, our users, or the public.

5.4 In a business transfer

If Kehilla is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any change in ownership or use of your personal information.

6. Payments and Subscriptions

Paid business listings are sold through Apple In-App Purchase (on iOS) and Google Play Billing (on Android). Apple and Google process your payment. We do not receive or store your full card number or security code.

We may store subscription and transaction information — such as transaction ID, plan, purchase status, amount, currency, renewal or expiration date, and refund or cancellation status — to provide paid features, manage accounts, provide support, prevent fraud, and keep required financial and legal records.

Subscriptions are managed through your Apple or Google account, and cancellation is handled through those systems.

7. Data Retention

We keep personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. We retain certain information after account closure where necessary to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and enforce our agreements. When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it.

8. Your Choices

  • Location. You can grant or deny location permission at any time in your device settings. Denying it limits location-based features but does not prevent use of the Service.
  • Push notifications. You can turn off push notifications in your device settings or within the app.
  • Account information. You can review and update your profile information in the app.
  • Account deletion. You can delete your account in the app or by contacting info@kehilla.app. Deleting your account removes your profile and personal information, subject to the retention described in Section 7.

9. Your California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, "CCPA"), gives you the rights described below.

9.1 Categories of information

In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information: identifiers (name, email, account and device identifiers, IP address); customer records (profile information); commercial information (subscription and transaction records); internet or network activity (usage and session information); geolocation data (precise location, with your permission); and user content you submit.

We collect this information from you directly and automatically through your use of the Service, as described in Section 3.

9.2 We do not sell or share your personal information

Kehilla does not sell your personal information, and does not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under the CCPA. Because we do not sell or share personal information, we do not offer a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link; there is nothing to opt out of.

We also do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would require us to offer a right to limit its use.

9.3 Your rights

Subject to certain exceptions, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we have collected about you and how we use and disclose it;
  • Access a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
  • Delete personal information we have collected from you;
  • Correct inaccurate personal information; and
  • Be free from discrimination for exercising these rights. We will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or provide a different quality of service because you exercised your rights.

9.4 How to exercise your rights

To make a request, contact us at info@kehilla.app. We will verify your request using information associated with your account before responding. You may use an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, subject to verification. We will respond within the timeframes required by law.

9.5 Minors

We do not sell or share the personal information of any user, including users we know to be under 16.

10. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the absolute security of your information.

11. Third-Party Links and Services

Business listings and content on the Service may link to third-party websites, phone numbers, or messaging services (such as WhatsApp). We do not control those third parties and are not responsible for their privacy practices. This policy applies only to the Service.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the Service or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
